What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves in the veins, which can result from aging, pregnancy, obesity, prolonged standing, or a family history of the condition.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
Symptoms include visible swollen veins, aching or heavy legs, burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in the lower legs.

Are varicose veins dangerous?
While often not dangerous, varicose veins can lead to complications such as ulcers, bleeding, and deep vein thrombosis if left untreated.

How are varicose veins diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and may include an ultrasound to check blood flow and the structure of the veins.

Treatments range from lifestyle changes and compression stockings to medical procedures such as sclerotherapy, endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), and vein stripping.

Is treatment for varicose veins covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans cover treatments that are medically necessary, especially if varicose veins cause symptoms. Cosmetic treatments may not be covered.

Can varicose veins be prevented?
While not all varicose veins can be prevented, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and wearing compression stockings can help reduce the risk.
